When You're a Caregiver With a Florida Real Estate License and Real Estate Has to Wait

You didn't plan for this. A parent's health declined, a spouse needed full-time support, a family member required care that only you could provide. Real estate went from a career to a distant second priority — and staying active in sales stopped being possible.

If you hold a Florida real estate license and caregiving has taken over your schedule, you're not alone. And you don't have to choose between your family and your license.

Why active real estate doesn't work for caregivers:

Active real estate runs on other people's timelines. Buyers want to see homes now. Sellers need answers by evening. Open houses happen on weekends. Offers expire in hours. When you're a caregiver, your availability isn't yours to give — and trying to maintain an active sales practice while providing full-time care for someone you love is a setup for failing at both.

Many Florida agents in caregiving situations let their license lapse simply because they can't see a way to keep it productive. But lapsing isn't the only option.

The referral model works around your life:

With your Florida real estate license held at a referral-only brokerage, you don't need to be available on anyone else's schedule. When someone in your network mentions they're thinking about buying or selling — a friend, a neighbor, a family member who isn't the one you're caring for — you can make a referral. Submit it through your brokerage, connect them with a great active agent, and earn a referral fee when the transaction closes.

The referral happens on your time. The transaction happens on the active agent's time. Your license stays active without requiring you to be present in ways caregiving simply doesn't allow.

What you do need to maintain:

Your Florida CE requirements and DBPR renewal fee don't pause during caregiving. Those obligations stay in place as long as your license is active. They're manageable — CE can be completed online at any hour — but they require attention every two years.
