Is Continuing Education (CE) Required to Keep My Real Estate License?

If you're thinking about becoming a referral agent, do you still have to complete continuing education (CE)?

Yes. Whether you're actively selling or earning through referrals, you must complete CE to keep your real estate license active in Florida.

Post-Licensing vs. Continuing Education

There are two types of education requirements depending on where you are in your licensing timeline:

1. Post-Licensing (First Renewal Only)

If you're renewing your license for the first time, you'll need to complete the Florida 45-hour post-licensing course before the renewal deadline. This is required for both sales associates and brokers.

2. Continuing Education (Every Two Years)

After your first renewal, you’ll need to complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years. This includes:

  • 3 hours of Core Law

  • 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices

  • 8 hours of Specialty Credit

You can take these courses online at your convenience through any state-approved provider.

Don't Forget to Renew With DBPR

Once you've completed your post-licensing or CE coursework, you’ll need to log into your DBPR (Department of Business & Professional Regulation) account and pay your renewal fee to keep your license active.

Missing the deadline could cause your license to become inactive—and that means you can't legally collect referral income.

Why It’s Worth It

Yes, CE takes a little time and effort. But staying compliant allows you to:

  • Continue earning referral fees

  • Avoid the hassle and cost of reactivating a license

  • Keep your professional status current

It’s a small investment that keeps your income potential wide open.
